I have 9 tanks right now. 3 of them are in the living room where my husband hangs out & the rest are in my office/fishroom. Punkster's tank was situated in a corner under a 29g tank. I have to bend way over to look into it. I've been doing some soul-searching (& discussing w/Hubby), about how I could have missed her suffering/death. Maybe I'm in over my head? He suggests taking down that tank & using that space for some storage or something (it's under my 29 F8 tank, so there may be some salt spray).

Don't beat yourself up over it, Pufferpunk. When a fish lives happily year after year without problems, you just assume it's going to be fine and stop watching it like a hawk, like you do with new arrivals. You had no reason to suspect any illness or other problems; it could have happened to anyone.

Awww, I wonder if she was just old and it was her time? Are there many records of keeping these guys and how long they live, especially the red variation?
I'm so sorry Jeni, she was a gorgeous girl. I know how it is with lurkers though, Bubba disappears for 3-4 days at a time and there's so much driftwood in there, I can't see him unless I get down on hands and knees with a flashlight sometimes.

Thenks Amy. I emailed Toyin (whom I got her from) about finding me a new one & asked if he knew the longevity of this species & color varient. I also invited him to post here.

I think you may be right though PP, if you are honest with yourself... maybe just leave that tank empty and concentrate on your others..
not meaning to make you soul search again, and i'm not sure you would have been able to save her even if you had noticed sooner, but the fact that you hadn't noticed means you clearly have alot going on already, and maybe now isn't the time to start out with a new fish..
sorry if that's the wrong thing to say, just my opinion.

I am so so sorry for your sad loss, it was your Punkster who inspired us to get our Congo puffer, we have had him for nearly four years now and he is such a sweetie, we would be devastated to lose him! We lost one of our dwarf puffers recently after 3 1/2 years which was so sad even though she was quite an elderly lady.I really feel your pain

Best wishes
Sue
