Europe and India are two places that spring to mind.

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Id like to know who "they" are. Im wondering if it is a place where meat is a luxury. There for more expensive and thats why they dont get to eat it very much.

Yes, not the food itself, just the thought of dying that way. To me it seems slow and drawn out.

We are all free to eat whatever they want and I won't judge anyone negatively based on their decisions. Regardless of the reasons behind their decisions. This is something we'll have to agree to disagree on ;)
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

In Flutter's defense I know that some Asianish countries tend to do less with meat.

When they do have meat they slice it razor thin and add it to things like clear soups and rice dishes. I know this from spending time with Laotian friends.

But places like Africa...meat can be scarce..so if they do not have meat, it is not by chocie..

BUT if they do have meat..the meat will be the main dish as the whole family sits around and picks at the carcass, I know this from my Nigerian friends.

However, I cannot say that I agree with Flutter's assertion that meat is the cause of our (America/Canada/mostly Caucasian) health problems. She makes some valid points, however, what she states is only one part of the puzzle...which is probably more about problems with portion control (We are such piggies)

I would be more inclined to believe that carbs are a leading cause of poor health (but then again Asian people eat a lot of rice, and they stay relatively thin)

It is probably more about our lifestyles than anything else..

You probably think of it that was because you think of such a think happening to a human (such as what you see on TV)

But really it is quite fast, painless except for the initial slice, and in most cases the animal is rather stunned by the event..and when done properly the animal is not thrashing about...not freaking out and it is over in less than a minute..

You'll notice that nowhere did I mention that meat was the cause  Eating too much of it is definitely part of it... But still just a part.

For dinner I had a chili and lime pork chop. I worked really hard physically today so I think the extra protein was well deserved

I certainly wouldn't say that meat is the only cause, but it's definitely a part of it.

Depends on whether it's white or brown rice.

Europe is too big of a place...and India is a little unfair considering reincarnation and cows :)

But Indians do still eat meat, when they can afford it, and when they do not live in the slums..

You eat pork? I would not have thought you would eat pork..(That is a whole nother conspiracy)

Europe?

Our meat eating / rearing practices came from there... India.. well maybe not beef and because meat is incredibly expensive.

Purple yes.. also in SE Asia meat is a luxury.. thus I stated if they could eat more they would. Even in Korea, China and Japan beef is VERY expensive and is thought of as a "treat" once in a while. If they could they would... On some level it is cultural, on another level it is economic. Outside of these 2 conditions, the only people who eat less "meat" are us westerners and that is by choice. I have met a couple religious groups and activist groups that are totally vegan, but I wouldn't call them a society (yet).

.. and yes portioning for us is a problem.

Actually, most Hindus are vegetarians, and it's one of the three largest religions in that continent. It's a spiritual and ethical choice for them. Buddhists comprise another one of the major religions, and they are primarily vegetarian for the same reasons.

Can't comment on the Hindu religion but Buddhists will eat meat. There are different sects that are strictly vegan but they are a very small minority. And I mean VERY small.

I dont think its the meat itself, more how its processed and what it is in.

If we cut back on MCd, burger king, etc that would change how americans were
