here is a side shot. I was pretty sure about the ID. But who knows, I could be wrong.
I figured the spots where a pretty good give away as to what he was.

Unfortunately that is not a Tetraodon Pustulatus, beautiful looking specimen though. It's either a very big Monotrete Abei or something like a Monotrete Leiurus or Cambodigensis. Great looking fish though. We'll see what Corvus thinks of it.

I agree with Hilly. In my opinion most likely an abei, but a very pretty and large one!

Pustulatus would have nasal organs wih two visible pointed lobes each (like a fahaka), Monotrete abei just has a quite small tube.

Rocke's abei:

Hoover's pustulatus

Have a look at the larger nasal organ of the putulatus, consisting of two long, pointed lobes. The abei has tiny lobes sitting on a small tube.

I'm leaning more toward abei rather than anything else now with these new pics. Rockers Abei was very big compared to mine who is quite slender, but I think this one looks bigger.

From the pictures, the eyes make me think pustulatus, but "outlines" around the spots make it look like and abei. The general shape seems to lean towards pustulatus more also. Not that I have any experience with either, but I vote pustulatus.

Good to finally see it P_A! I think you were suppose to post pics a while back :P

As noted above: The African Tetradon spp. can easily be told apart from the Asian Tetraodon spp. and Monotrete spp. by looking at their nostrils (the little things in front of their eyes). The Africans (Mbu, duboisi, shoutedeni, miurus, fahaka, pustulatus) have two long lobes not unlike Arothron spp. just coming out of their skin.

Compare pic above and

The Asian Monotrete (abei, baileyi, cochinchinensis etc.) have shorter lobes sitting on a small stem.

A clear picture of the nostrils could show where this puffer comes from.

Pictures do help, especially the first one. Thanks for posting.

I do not mean to attack anyone (members, petshop, importer) personally, but the nostrils clearly say Asia. Maybe he came from Asia to Africa. Being close to the business myself I am aware that sometimes names/information gets mixed up horribly intentionally or by accident. As a side note: Congo river does not flow through Cameroon, the Dja is the only Cameroon river flowing into the Congo basin, so coming from Cameroon and Congo river is impossible. So if he's from Cameroon, but possibly "caught" in the Congo this is a sign of "mixed up information".

My opinion: M. abei.

Good point on the size PA. At least there's no worries about salt/brackish levels hurting the fish to worry about here, both species are freshwater and as long as the tank space is adequete it will be fine for whichever species it does turn out to be.
