Our tank is not a corner tank it just has a slightly bowed front - this is why i stopped posting on here as people make assumptions as to size of tank we have and the type of tank. - It holds approximately 450litres - Now your all gonna moan and say that it's too small of course I would love to have a tank the size of my lounge but this isn't the US and everything isn't done in XXXXXL size!!!
At the end of the day Moby is a well looked after MBU, the water quality is always checked and changed on a regular basis, and as you can see for your self he looks fit and healthy....
So then Manutius how big is your tank as from your pics it doesn't really look that big ......................................
My tank is even smaller mate at 400L and I have lamented over this for some time, that was the whole reason I wrote the article as I felt other poeple should know exactly what these puffer species need for an enriched life. I Beleive that Mbu spend most of the day cruising great distances in the wild so a tank little over double their length really isn't suitable in my opinion, hance the need for mammoth tanks.
Not sure I get your point about not bieng in America though, no matter where you come from you would have to have a tank of that size custom built. As for not posting becuase people assume that your tank is too small thats becuase it is in our opinion.
Its basically a case of both you and I and many others being duped by our LFS who say the tank we have would be fine to lien their pockets at the expense of these fish and other large species expense. If I had the info I have now I would never have bought him
Like you say Moby is a good looking and healthy specimen that is loved greatly and cared for as is Clooney, so all we can do is care for them the best we can
I think most of us here are very conscious of the impact that our hobby can have on wild populations. I think that many of us would like to see some regulation on the import of large fish that need specialist care. It is done with arrowana but this is reflected in the price that you pay for the fish.
Its a bit of a double-edged sword really because if we stopped buying them then they would stop importing them and the problem would be solved. If your situation is similar to mine then you would have seen the fish and fell in love with it, rightly so,and your poorly informed LFS (also my LFS) told you it would be fine in a tank of your size so you bought it. If both you and I and the LFS were more informed and willing to understand what these puffers in particular really needed to have excellent quality of life they would not have ordered them and we therefore would not have been able to buy them.
The reason I wrote my article with the help of the mods here was to alert people to these issues. I didn't mean to appear negative about your tank size but it makes me cross that it has been allowed to happen through the lack of care or interest in the fish's long term health from the LFS.
I do not doubt for one second that you are a poor fishkeeper, Moby looks very healthy but in the long run we have to make do with what we have. I cannot build the huge tank, neither can you so we have the chores of 50% weekly water changes to keep the nitrate levels down
glad you never fed the crab, he is a lovely looking puffer, never seen a good photo of one puffing , mine never does that, just bought a new tank for Spike as was badly advised by LFS... update soon
