They can get to 18"+. You will need a tank of around 125 gallons so a 4x2x2 minimum and they generally have a bad attitude. Most will not accet anything else in the tank with them.

my intention if i do get it would be to leave it on its own altho its fresh water as opposed to brackish i take it it would have the same food types as my green spotted

cool and just to go back to the giant spotted would you recommend him in a species only tank or could i put other fish in with him?

I havent tried any tankmates with him but from the amount of time whitebait lasts in the tank I would be dubious to try. If I had a a big tank free 120g or so I would consider trying 3 or 4 together, which I think would look awesome. But as mine cost me £45 for one it is an expensive experiment if they were cheaper then yes I would give it a go.

How do we know this for sure? Also a "big, messy" fish should probably be in a 40-55g.

Mine is in a 36UK/43 US. The tank dimensions are 4ft long, 18" high 12" wide. Plenty of space for him to move around and add interesting decor. Something around this size should be fine for one.
