mine change colour all the time... well dull when sleeping... but once feeding its feeding time they brighten up to a really nice neon green glow

I am switching to a white sand substrate, and if substrate and environment can enfluence their colors, we'll see if he lightens up.

Instead of sand consider aragonite, it'll keep your ph up, and is much less trouble than sand. Its also white.

Yeah, I have 5 lbs of white sand and 10 lbs of crushed coral on its way. I went ahead and put the sand down.... no color change. I bet the guy at the pet store did give me the wrong puffer.... I pointed out the all neon one. Damn pointing.

Coloration is heavily tied to stress. Give it time.

Yeah, that might be it. I did use biospira on the tank but I think I've raised the salinity too quickly and it's been stuck in the nitrite spike for a week or so now. My nitrite's at about 2.0-3.0 and there's not a whole lot I can do since lately my tapwater tests at 1.0 ammonia. How much does salt detoxify nitrite?

His color has seemingly lightened up a bit though, since I changed to sand. But still, the only phosphorescent patch is on his head.

Hmm, is it biospira or cycle that is suppose to be used the same day you introduce fish to a tank? I swore someone siad it was one of them you can use right before adding the fish without having a cycling period. I've not used any of those products for a while cause I use chemicals to cycle my tanks or depending on whats going into a tank and the size I use my cycling mollies.

Bio Spira, Cycle is crap. Bio spira did get my tank into the nitrite spike after a few days (2 or 3, dunno if that's normal though), but the shipping was delayed and such. I have a low nitrate reading since putting it in that hasn't gone up and my nitrite is climbing. Plus I bumped my salinity .002 sg in one day, stupidly figuring that if it was the only day I raised it that week then it would even out to .002 that week.

B-S worls perfectly, if used as directed & kept cold.

But does it take time to cycle through? Or can you add fish same day? (when I first used it a friend came over with some and set up the tank and did his thing, when I first entered the world of cycling)

In FW, the worst that can be expected with BioSpira is a low but positive nitrite reading for a few days, normally no ammonia at all and often no nitrite either. If the product got warm for a variable length of time it can easily be damaged.

I don't have enough BW or SW experience to call that.

With Biospira, you need to add the fish right away after you add the biospira (otherwise the bacteria will starve and die, and you just wasted the money you spent on the Biospira).
