I always pronounce it Um-Bu (long U)
It's rather funny that my three month old says Mbu often in his vocal explorations.

RTR - sorry I misunderstood you! I thought you were saying mbu's were from malawi as opposed to the mbuna cichlids!

It nothing else, "mbu" is the easiest species name to remember and to type correctly.

I spoke to someone at work the other week with the surname mbu, he was surprised to hear me pronounce it correctly I think.

id say its Ma-boo...i dont see it being pronounced any other way.

We've already been though this discussion. It's Swahili for "rock" & is pronounced um-boo.
