Meanwhile, while looking for pure amonia, should I just put in a small pinch of flake food every so often? If so, how often, how much?

I commonly do so while holding a tank briefly. If the tank was previously cycled (usual case for me) I add prepared food in approximately the amount I would use for that tank of schooling fish, but add it every other day. Snails are either present or added, so the tank is temporarily converted to a snail-production area.

When using pure ammonia to cycle a tank, is there any dosage guideline?

To bring the concentration to 3-5ppm ammonia in the tank. There is too much vaiation in the concentration of commercial products to use volume doseage, you need to measure the result in the tank.

Aw jeez, with an ammonia test kit, of course. That would make it pretty easy, I'm guessing...

You got it in one - well, actually in two, but the topic shifted so we'll credit the bullseye.
