I only rinsed one of my filter floss's in a year, i havent touched the others or the bioballs. Just leave them until your flow starts to drop, then only rine one of them never all.
Are you removing any un eaten food from the tank, as this could be a factor also.

They are like children. We are the adults and caregivers and have to set limits for them, whether they like it or not.
If you keep giving in to him, he'll keep throwing a fit to get what he wants. Stop giving in to his unreasonable (and unhealthy) demands. He may throw fits for awhile but will eventually get used to it, even if he doesn't ever grow to like it.

Sounds to me like you may be buying RO water from your LFS? If so, that's a really bad idea & may be why your puffer is stressed. Start doing water changes with your tap water, dechlorinated.

ok well ill stop feeding him so much even if he is a stroppy bugger!
i work from home so all shellfish and poop gets taken out instantly, ill try everything your all saying and keep you posted.....ill put some pics up soon to.
if anyone else has any other ideas im all ears........

what is RO water? the i have been using conditioned tap water until the last water change, the bought water is ph7 and no chlorine etc is this not a good idea then ?

Ask the shop if this water has been filtered by a Reverse Osmosis system. It has been stripped from all essential elements that a FW fish needs in it's water. Hard tap water is fine for your puffer. Start changing it out, by daily 20% water changes.

heavy breathing can be a sign of nitrite (no2) poisoning.
Adding dirt from a long running filter to your new filter may enhance the cycling process.
