hi,
looks like a very typical cochinchinensis to me. why do you guys think it could be an abei. abeis usually have white spots on dark background while the sometimes change the colour...
like corvus said, with a longer snout i could have been a leiurus, but the snout is much too short.

Agree with Martin Hi.

The shape of the head does not look abei to me.

Does the fish have a red/orange cluster of smaller targets around its main target?
Or is it just a single spot?
Regards

You're starting to make me doubt that mine's an abei too as it is so similar to the one in question here :?

EDIT: after another look I am beginning to think that both mine and this puffer are cochinchinensis judging by the snout and target spot .... :)

I have no idea how you guys can keep the target puffers straight.. I'm glad I can tell the basic puffers apart!

Its beautiful, that's what it is!

I have an abei and a cochcochinensis and I would rule the cochcochinensis out straight away from these pics.

I am leaning more towards turgidus.

How big is he?

hi,
the last picture is also looking more like a turgidus than like a cochinchinensis to me because he has mor than one orange/red spot. the thing is that turgidus should not have an ocellus or a black blotch under the dorsal origin wich is bigger than the other black spots. maybe you should wait a while. it could be a juvenile and maybe loose that bigger blotch when it´s getting older.
i quote:
"Monotrete turgidus
Diagnosis. Distinguished from other species of genus in Mekong basin by:
°greenish back with black spots, not well demarcated from belly wich can be from greyish to dark brown, with or without dark markings / ° adults without ocellus or larger black blotch under dorsal origin, but with several black spots on body with a paler (orange or red in life)ncentral area / °juveniles usually with one or several red spots on flank. Size up to at least 185 SL." (Kottelat; Maurice: Fishes of Laos. Colombo: WHT Publications, 2001. S. 166

hi,
i am 100% sure that this is not an abei. trust my eyes!
on his right side it can be seen that the red spod under caudal peduncle is not bigger than the other bigger spots. on his left side the red spot seem to be a little bigger than the other ones. but while it hase more paler-centered spots on the flank it could never be a cochinchinensis, cause they only got one.
abeis usually have a dark background with paler spots. while some of them do have darks spots on pale background the bodyshape is totally different. take for example the snout!
