Either is fine apparently. If using tank water, make sure its tank water that you have removed into a container during the water change. Don't clean it in the tank itself.

I finally found my solution. I don't know why but recently the tap water from my house is really high in nitrate. Last year I remember to test my water and it was fine until recently. So what I did, I went to Walmart and bought the Culligan drinking water 10 gallon and changed the water. Amazingly, now the puffer is back to normal. They are starting to recover although not as naughty as it used to be, but they are a lot better now.

Great detective work and good news for the puffer. However looks like you may need to start treating your tapwater for nitrate before adding
