This is a great filter, but honestly a bit small for your tank. It is rated for a maximum tank size of 50 gallons (so just barely undersized for your tank). The larger problem is that puffers are very messy fish, so people usually recommend over-filtration. An Emperor 400 would have been a better choice, but now that you have the 280, I wouldn't return it. What I would do is just leave the 280 on while they are pretty small, but once they are close to adults I would buy a second filter for the tank. Two smaller filters is better than 1 large filter. For example; If one ever failed, you'd still have one working. You can also do a really thorough cleaning on one of your filters w/o having to worry about killing all your nitrifying bacteria since you have a second cycled filter running...

So I would plan on buying a second 280 in a year (or maybe less). You could also go with a different kind of filter, like an internal Eheim Aquaball, or an external canister.

Not my favorite filter but it'll do. I prefer the Aquaclear filters. You can stack them with whatever you wish, utilizing a sponge filter (for mechanical filtration--can be rinsed weekly), filter floss (to "polish" the water crystal clear--replaced monthly) & BioMax (for biological filtration--rinsed every 3 months or so).
