Whilst not viable in a tank with a GSP, it should be mentioned that the combination of mollies, Florida flagfish, Amano shrimp, and nerite snails usually takes care of algae in low salinity aquaria. Mollies and nerites could also be used in a mid to high salinity tank together with, if you could find them, red-nose shrimp, Caridina gracilirostris, and Hawaiian volcano shrimp, Halocaridina rubra. So while plecs aren't viable, there are workarounds in brackish water tanks that can be used.

After 3 years of fighting hair algee, I have finally tanken the advice of others, to use mollies in my F8 tank. They've been doing a fantastic job! Funny, that's the only tank w/that problem. The babies don't stand a chance though.
