Doesn't really matter who does it. If you're asking if the store is doing it, no, I doubt they are. But by selling them, they perpetuate the practice. If LFSes refused to sell them, the practice would stop.

To make money, why else? Unsuspecting or uncaring people will buy them because they think they look pretty. Same with the dyed fish and lasered fish. Here, take a look at this:

I understand how that would bother you but to say that that store mutilates there fish is not fare. Yes they sell a fish that is purposely mutilated but IMHO they take very good care of there puffers so i will continue to shop there.

I didn't say they mutilate them. I said they sell fish that are mutilated. By doing so, they keep up the demand for them so that the people who ARE doing it continue to do it because they continue to make money from doing it. I don't care how well they take care of their other fish, it doesn't justify them selling this particular fish. Just because Petland may take good care of the puppies and kittens once they reach their stores, doesn't excuse the fact that they obtain them from puppy and kitty mills, perpetuating the need for such and giving money to the horrible people that run them.

There is such a thing as the lesser of two evils. There has to be, or else we're screwed. Given the choice between a store that treats their fish very well but sells mutilated fish and a store that takes very poor care of ts fish but doesn't sell mutilated fish, I think I'd choose the store that takes good care of their fish, and tell them I disapprove of their selling the mutilated fish.
The truth is, if they didn't sell them, someone else would, and by not supporting the store that does take good care of their fish, you're using your voting dollars against them. Ideally there would be a perfect store that didn't pull crap like this, and didn't need to to stay afloat, unfortunately we're stuck with what we have until we can change it.

Its not a lesser of evils in this case, as there are a number of stores in the area that take very good care of their fish AND don't sell mutilated fish. How exactly do you plan to change anything if you don't do anything about it? I use my dollars in this situation, and will do my best to ensure that no one else I know of buys anything from them. I'll post it repeatedly on various websites where I know Wisconsinites in the area frequent and hope that word gets out. Sure, they may not feel it but if everyone did the same, they'd defintely feel it wouldn't they. Sure as hell beats sitting back and doing nothing IMO.

I didn't say i would do nothing about it. But i'm not going to bocott this store when they taken very good care of ther puffers. If i boycott them then i would be trying to put a very good puffer sorce out of buisness and i won't do that. I will let them no that i disagree that they sell these fish but you know that it won't do any good and you know no matter how many people you tell that store will remain open. If peolpe listened we woudn't see the cruel treatment that happens to chickens and other forms of food for humans.

I'm with momma on this one. I take it one step further- I go to the shop that carries the mutilated and dyed fish (they have a great variety of fish to look at). When they ask if I want some fish- I tell them no and why. Then I go to one of the other shops and ask them to order the fish I wanted (if they don't have it in stock). I give them the benefit of hearing me say it. Not a lot they can say in response. I had a real good conversation with one of the order guys at the shop- he said the same things I'm hearing here"...if not us, someone else"... to which I respond "not the shop I'm giving my money too". He wasn't sold- but he saw my point, we'll see if it has any impact.
I'm not a casual customer in for a couple neons or a betta for my kid- I'm the guy buyin more exotic cichlids and puffers- they want people like us to return and tell others about them.
