The tip was adding the slate. although they often show this behaviour obviously they will not lay unless they have something firm to lay on. I have watched them very closely for the last two weeks. I thought adding the slate would help but I didn't expect a result so soon.The male is guarding and fanning the eggs. he has become super agressive. The female has moved off into the tank and is resting out of sight.

Looks like most of them are fertilised. I only have two that are white.

The top of my "female's" cave is rainbow slate. Do you think that would work or should I plan on getting another piece and maybe sticking it in some shadowy place?

yep put away from main viewing but somewhere you can 'peep' at.
Try to get a bigger bit of slate than mine. I feel its not as big as it should be.

Now that you mentioned it, the LFS that had their puffer spawning had a flat piece of slate as well. It was in the open and the puffs were not shy about it.

I'd start adding egg-layer Liquifry to the tank now, which will produce tiny insuforia for them to eat when hatched.

Cool, I'll get some dark slate before I start working on removing the divider. Maybe I'll have some luck too!

That is so cool! I hope it all works out for the best! I would love to have puffer babies, all I ever get is Molly babies and snail babies.

I have started that.
The male is still on gaurd duty. Ever since they were laid he has fanned and hovered just above the eggs.His fins have not stopped all at for a full 24hrs.The delicate manner is awesome to watch.

That is so cute- I wish my F8s were as good parents.
Congrats Rocker!!!! Your video was incredible! I hope you have success raising the fry. I have my 15 gallon set up for my eggs. Maybe we'll be puff parents together!
I have a slate in my tank, do you think most puffers need one to lay?? I just realized I found the eggs near the slate, although not on it.
