What about Maxi-jets? I've found them quiet and effective thus far, but I just got them (two 1200's). Anyone else use them?

Yes, I use several of them for varying purposes. I like their function, but they are a PITA to clean for me.

I use a Maxi-Jet 600 in my DYI ATO. It's quiet, effective and supposed to be rated for constant on/off applications. No complaints here.

Maxijets are great, I have 4 on a wave maker and another two, one feeding my fuge and one in my 90g cichlids tank. They are quiet, effiecent, cheap, last forever and can be used on a wavemaker!

I like my two seios, but they clog easy and are harder to clean than Maxijets.

My Rio burnt out with in 6 months... waste of cash and a hazard.

MeKong - Rios do not have a high-reliability reputation with me either - but I have had a few really good ones. To bad you cannot count on them.

I do agree that Maxijets are very lasting pumps.

I did not think that anybody used oil anymore... and had not for years. That is/was horrible. I learned that lesson long ago with pond pumps.

I know its late jumping on, but I'd like to add my praises to the Seio line of powerheads.

Pros: Well, this thing has a serious amount of flow, at a very low power consumption for similarly sized pumps. The flow is a nice dispersed flow unlike that of the maxijet stype pumps, and has a nearly 3" output nozzle. Strong enough to get ALL of the water moving in our 150gallon reef tank and ricochet off of the opposite end of the 6' tank.
Cons: This thing is huge. Plain and simple, its a huge pump. It will take up a decent amount of space in the tank, however, its worth it.
Overall: A great pump for the money. The flow can be aimed anywhere and if done correctly not knock things over. We have it in our 150gal reef tank with a sand substrate and have no issues with sand storms, but its strong enough flow to aid in coral health, as well as fish health.

Oops, didnt know this disscucsion was going on. Yep, i have a singal maxi-jet 1200, and have found it to be very quiet and reliable.( even though ive only been running it for 4 weeks)


Kind of OT, but did lisalisa go on vacation or something? usually she posts a lot? havent seen anything in a while.

I also have two modified MaxiJet 1200s (nozzle chopped off) and they are GREAT. With the nozzle chopped off, the flow is much wider and more dispersed but still strong, and on top of that, if its restarted, the flow can change direction as it comes out of the hole at a 45d angle.

pros: provides wonderful current down low and my fish love to let it help them hunt for food by turing vertical and letting it push them so they can straff the bottom with out much work, also lets them play in the running water

I have the Aquaclear 110 (500) in my 55 gallon--it is rated at 60-110 gallon sized tanks. It cycles 500 gallons an hour. Not bad for that type of power filter, that the common folk can afford.
