Ya know, i'm not convinced that's an F8 at all.

No tail spots, and it's spotting makes it look more like a cross between a GSP and an F8... making it a ceylon but I may be wrong.

Phaedrus - you may well be right. Maybe a nice side on photo would help, but in the video it looks more like a ceylon than a figure 8.

I guess now that I look at it, he does look like a Ceylon...guess I won't be getting anymore for this tank like I was going to.

Also, if it is a Ceylon, then I'm worried about him since the pet store had him in FRESHWATER. I'm slowly moving him to brackish, but apparently, they need high-end saltwater.

What exactly is the SG of high-end saltwater?

It really looks like a Ceylon. I woulnd't worry that he was in FW, just slowly up the SG as per the article on GSPs.

Anyways, I called the pet store, and they told me that the tank that they keep they pufferfish in have BOTH Figure 8 and Green Spotted puffers in it.

So, it seems like I either have a Figure 8 like I originally thought, or I have a GSP...though he doesn't look like a GSP at all to me, but what do I know, I'm just a novice here.

Any help would be great.

The LFS has no clue what is in their tank.

When these fish are collected they are all pooled together and mixed together. They can't easily seperate them out again, so they just get a random sampling of puffers. Sometimes they are properly labeled for them, but more often they are not.

GSPs, ceylons, and F8s are very easy to missidentify since thye look very similar as jeuvies. That is most definately not a GSP though. And It lacks the tail spot of an F8. It is a ceylon to be sure.

Well, I thank you all for your input. Thank goodness that I have all the equipment I need to go high-end brackish, and thank goodness I went to a 40 gallon tank instead of a 20 like I was going to.

Too bad I can't keep 2 of these guys in my 40, that would be nice. Ah well.

He'll fill up that 40 nicely. ~8inches full grown.

Definitely a Ceylon, but I'm not surprised you bought him as a Fig8. I don't know how many times I've tried to explain the difference to pets stores just to hear "He's got an 8 on his back; he's a figure 8 puffer"
And in defense of the stores (very poor excuse) they probably ordered them as Fig8s.

It is a good thing you got the 40g tank. I almost wish that I could "accidentally" get a ceylon instead of a fig8. That way I'd just have to set up a bigger tank. And saltwater, too.
