Great news

I kinda figured... I mean what do you think happens in the wild?

Face it - even though we are all far from perfect, our wet pets most likely have better chances for a longer life in captivity than they would have had in the wild.

It is too bad that we can only rarely breed other puffers than the DPs. Hopefully some of you younger hobbyists will need to polish captive spawning of more puffers.

I'd love to read about how you saved your fish from lockjaw if you have time to post about it. Don't worry if not.

Have given this a fair bit of thought when my previous puffer appeared ill.

I'm speculating at this point but I imagine that in some cases fish do die of silly things and the species lives on due to numbers (chances increased with number of young and rate of reproduction)

Though it's a loose comparison, humans can die of internal injuries. Also we used to and sometimes still do die of minor curs and grazes and the resulting infections.

Again, I'm wildly speculating but it's just food for thought.

Do remember that a fish which survives long enough to breed and produce one viable offspring has retained it's place in the gene pool. If it has produced more than one viable offspring, it has increased it's share of the gene pool.
