Mine has not 'puffed' yet. Scruffy is pretty good at 'playing rock' because he blends in to the gravel so well. I do have to look for him sometimes, but he is right there in the open. I did accidentally overfed once and he sat for days like a lump. So I learned from it and dont feed as heavy or as often and he seems a bit more active. If he does decide to be a cave dweller he has got two nice spots available. Hopefully Scruffy stays active...

Caves/refuges can be just about any water-safe material - stones, slate slabs, unglazed pottery or fragments thereof, etc. If it is water safe and you can keep it from collapsing on the fish, it can be used.

I think you're probably right; he always looks horrified when he's caught puffing, deflates immediately, and goes and sulks in the Pig Cave

My father had a 400gallon tank with a Dogface Puffer. You could walk to the glass and if he knew you he would puff. He would also puff around dinner time to get some food.
