I used bio-spira. I have a 30g rank and when they get bigger ill move them to their own tanks.

Also their sizes are different. One is a little over 1 inch and the other is a little under 2 inches. Does that matter?

Yes it does. Puffers are very aggressive, territorial creatures.

What SG are they at? I'm not so sure B-S works well in BW, it's a SW bacteria. Please be sure to test ammonia/nitrite/nitrate at least daily & have 50-80% of the 30g water ready to change.

The SG is at 1.010 and the nitrate and nitrite are at 0.

The ammonia level is at 0.25 ppm

I did the ammonia test again and it's at 0

I have another problem with the 2 inch puffer. I checked on him at night and he was pitch black. I turned on the lights and walked away for a minute and he had turned to his normal white color. Is he stressed about the night time? I'm not sure.

Night time colours. Puffers can turn dark to blend in to their surroundings, good camouflage

What is the specific gravity? "Low brackish" means different things to different people - please give us numbers so we can understand what is going on...

You need to keep the ammonia/nitrite at 0. Do a minimum of 50% WC on the tank. You'll be doing this (or much more) daily, to keep the toxins produced from the fish from poisoning them If I were you, I'd get that system back to FW & then add the Safestart to your filter (as per my original instructions to you).

Okay, I did what you asked.

I cleaned the tank out completely and added tap, prime, safestart, and puffer. now the tank is freshwater and mostly cycled. In about an hour I'll check the ammonia, pH, nitrate, and nitrite.

He seems a little uneasy about the change but maybe it's just me.

If you added safestart to filter at f/w you should be golden. Trust me when I say that was a wise move. Your puff will thank you
