Puffer growth in captivity

For the marine puffers, FOWLR + a good skimmer and preferably with a large 24/7 lighter macroalgae refugium will markedly reduce the water change requirements, but I personally would use a substantially larger tank than a 125 to avoid stunting the fish and allow for any exercise at all. I seriously doubt that a 2-foot plus fish can turn around in a 125 gallon tank. I would opt for a 3x3' cross-section minimum and a 6' long tank. A 4x4' cross-section would be better. The fish would still be severely limited in swimming space. Large puffers are not good candidates for captivity without open-ended budgets and usually professional help.

Large FW puffers (T. mbu) are far worse.
