I actually didn't have a heater in the tank due to my apartment being so warm. It's winter here in wisconsin and with being upstairs it's pretty warm. I have a sticker type thermometer though. How accurate are they? Are they more likely to read ambient temp then the true temp of the tank?

I would say they are very inaccurate. Get a floating thermometer, they are cheap. It's possible the tank was too cold. Even with a "warm" room temp, it still doesn't mean the tank water is warm enough. How warm do you keep your apt?
