My concern is the extra maintenance of a deeper sand bed. Actually, sand isn't necessary for this species at all. I really believe you should reduce this to 1/2". I also believe he will be a lot prettier with lighter substrate:

No worries, I am taking some of it out. I didn't realize how deep it was on the cave side. I'll take some out the smooth it around more evenly.

I know this species doesn't need sand, but mine sure loves to lay on it a glide on it :D

Yeah, get it down to 1/2", so you don't have to worry so much about thoroughly stirring it & bothering all those plants & stuff. Is he using his cave?

Not at all!!! When I first got him I put him in a 10 gallon to get his tank ready. When I purchased him I also bought his cave. So, when he went into the 10, I put the cave in there. In the 10 he loved the cave, but in his new tank he hasn't gone near it. He just swims about or lurks in the plants. He has 2 favorite lurking spots among the plants.

I think at this point, the cave will be a great place for his food to hide from him!

Yup. Epoxy will work, but I don't want to have to discard a tank to redecorate. 2 Little Fishes' epoxy putty is good and safe, but holds too long for me to use for decoration.
