OK, I will be the odd-ball. I never single-filter any tank 10 gallons and above. I always multi-filter, frequently with more than one type/format of filter. The only format I do not use is the HOB. That exclision is because in my old age I have become neurotic about noise and also spend a good bit of time fine-tuning current in my tanks. HOBs are prone to noise and difficult to fine-tune for current.

I also always over-filter.

Have you guessed yet that I am a bit compulsive?

I am in 100% agreement with you rtr. I would never run a tank with a single filter again, the benefits are unlimited as Is the flexibility this practice provides. But also I do not have storage space for all my stuff, my lockup and mums shed and blah blah blah are all full. Time to sell some stuff. Anyway to the point of my post, if you have the means and don't mind spending some time tweaking ( I love to tinker) then definately buy more than one filter, you will not regret it

We always try 200%+ filtration on puffer tanks, I like to have 2 filters at least (redundancy..Sh*t happens, unfortunately we need get a bigger emergency generator after this winter as we are adding tanks >>> ), the HOBs are noisy so get relegated to the basement, but on the positive side is if you come across the right fish/ rare puffer species you can have an operational tank very quickly whilst you put an new filter in parallel in the tank you took it from with minimal impact.

LOL! I have no problems with being a bit OCD. It is safer with tanks. Redundancy is worth a lot. Plus, this house was designed in part to be our retirement home, with space for my space (and power) eating hobbies and lots of out-of-use storage. I do not have a lot of different brands of equipment - that way, spares require less storage space, and many otherwise out-of use units are running on operating tanks so that they are always available for use with no more than a rinse needed to start a "new" tank. I do have too many stored tanks - they eat storage space.

Even with my moderate physical disabilities, keeping up my relatively complex multi-tanks systems is actually quite easy and not very time-consuming.
