Put half of the media from your cycled filter into your new filter, sprinkle a little fish food in the new tank daily and test the water quality, if ammonia & nitrite values are 0 and you're reading nitrate then you can put the GSP in because the tank is cycled -don't do a water change at this stage until you put the GSP in, once you add the GSP continue to monitor the water quality and if ammonia and nitrite levels rise then carry out water changes and maybe add more media from the cycled filter.
Once you have put your GSP in and the tank is cycled then you can continue to do your regular weekly 50% water changes.
Don't take the entire filter or the entire media off your Betta tank because that would leave the Betta without filtration?

You better do a BIG WC & remove all that rotting fish food, before adding the puffer!

Or you could just use ammonia.

One more thing. I have my tank cycled. Nitrates and nitrites and ph looks great. My sand will not be in till next week. Should I seperate my puffer from my betta now (and put him in the new tank) and just remove him again when Im ready to add the sand? Or would this be too much stress? Im just worried about my betta getting attacked.

OK. Ive got my GSP in the new 29 gallon tank along with a used filter from the old tank and some gravel and deco from the old tank. He ate quite a bit and swam around happily! All looks well right now.

Im still building my tank. Got rid of those cheesy plastic decorations and got live rock, rock with coraline algae, hair algae and some other kind of algae that looks like tall trees?? lol. I also just added three hermits and a Dragon Goby. All is well for now.
