I am still learning! ThanksRTR wrote:Nerites are FW/BW/SW snails. The Olive Nerites will withstand any of those 3 conditions. Many of them require SW to breed and later migrate upstream to FW. The Olives do deposit eggs in FW routinely, but no babies survive. Rumor has it that they will suvive and grow in FW in green water, but I have not yet tried this myself.

I doubt the statement that the Olive Nerites "WILL NOT reproduce in freshwater conditions because they need brackish for breeding purposes" as I know two folks who have both reported successful breeding (both personal communication, not yet published), but as that is not my work I am not at liberty to reveal their techniques.

I just bought 2 Nerite Zebra snail from Local Big Al.. I think they over charge for the snail but they are the only one carry it in town.. they charge $4.99 CND each.. Yike..
It's from the FW tank in the store..but now in my BW with 3 Babies GSP that around 1/2 inch. The puffer left the 2 snails alone.. it's bigger then their head

Yup, I used to feed my 4" GSP snail with snail ...but that puffer passed away long time ago...
I will let the 3 Babies puffer have little fun with Nerite Zebra until they are big enough to attack it...
My sister Discus amazon tank full of baby snail right now..when ever they reach the big enough size I will drop some into my Babies GSP tank...

I got some olive nerites a few weeks ago from Wilma and the puffs don't seem to care that they are in there anymore. Olive nerites have a sort of trapdoor that protects them from the puffers, unless of course the puffers chomp them. The first few days, the snails stayed pretty much in their shells because the puffers kept harassing them. Now they cruise along the glass and on the decor, eating algae as they go. I put the first olive nerite on the big piece of tree root that I have in my tank, and you can see a trail where he went down it eating the algae. I've also got a ton of eggs in both the brackish water puffer tank, and my freshwater betta tank. They are doing a great job keeping the algae down.
BTW, I have figure 8 puffers.
