That bacteria that they are harvesting is similar to the ones that make puffers poisonous and my little crab "Actaeodes tomentosus". They are dump sites for heavy metals and other nasty stuff.

Have you seen a zebra muscle in your seafood department lately?

Literally all filter feeders will pull that stuff, its not like filter feeders choose what come to them. All filter feeders are notorious for building up stuff like that, zebra mussels live much shorter lives, and therefore should have less potential for bio accumulation should be less. I don't know.

they don't metabolize and release the toxins in the same fashion.

It is possible, but... FW mollusks and SW puffers' digestive systems may not agree. The odd part is the cyanobacteria, that they both posses that AFAIK. Deadly for humans and other species.

The cusp of the argument is that no one has tried it. With puffers, what hobbyist is willing to try it and risk $$ in live stock?
Puffers over time become detoxified because in the hobby we serve them human grade safe foods. This is the big question mark in this situation. It is not human safe. Can a puffer metabolize the toxins? Which species will and which won't?

It will take some tracing back to the origins of the muscle, and have that correlated with the puffers involved. OR just trial and error.

Keep in mind that science is sometimes years behind the hobby. A situation like this will crop up and it takes YEARS of testing to prove or disprove (if a scientist is willing to put in that time and his / her credibility on the line). Meanwhile, the fish keepers are running their own trials so there is only speculation.
