IMHO & IME, goldfish babies are a massive waste of time. No fish other than Koi (a goldfish relative) are culled as heavily as goldfish fancies. Far less than 1% make the grade, and they require massive water volumes to rear. Buy good specimens not fully grown and enjoy them.

The sailfins are sure enjoying the eggs!

I know what you mean, I was browsing around at Petsmart today looking at some 125-150 gallon tanks they had on sale for less than $500 and happen to peek at the goldfish they had for sale and saw some big beautiful Orandas and Rukins (my favorites) begging at the glass to be adopted. But my 55 is already maxed out on goldies. lol

The cories might have a problem with unstable temperatures. Even just a couple degrees' fluctuation every day can be pretty risky and affect their immune systems.

Foothills Cories are only barely tropical. That is a case where you really need to research where the fish's primary home really was in the wild. Those fish breed when the spring run-off from the mountains is cooler from snow melt. And they can and do live lifespans comparable to goldfish at their optimum (low for tropical tanks).

I only very rarely use any heaters in my operating tanks. Because I always over-filter by usual hobby standards, waste equipment heat keeps my occupied tanks in the low to mid 70sF year-round, or warmer. The tank room off the pool room (the real tank room) is fully on the house HVAC to keep the temps and humidity down to acceptable levels for my fish. I do use heaters in my water aging/tempering vessels as they are primarily on the lowest tier (floor level) and do not have the equipment waste heat to keep them above ambient. Folks with only a few tanks scattered around the house who do not over-filter may commonly require heaters. I am far more likely to need chillers. That is why I had to give up the fancy goldfish when we built this house. They could only have been kept in the potting shed/secondary tank room. That room is not on the house HVAC so can be operated cooler than we keep the house. The Brits seem to have only recently rediscovered central heating which they had back in Roman times. A lot of us Yanks are to them effete fugitives from the tropics because we spoil ourselves to year-round even temperatures.

Unfortunately, fish-keeping really is easier under British conditions, with heat added to the tanks in winter to year-round. Those of us with equipment-heavy tanks have problems with marginal tropicals and fancy goldfish, and the strictly streamlined non-fancy goldfish are purely outdoor critters.

I have no heaters in my fish room. With the de-humidifier blasting hot air in there, it's always a good 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house.

Does it cost a lot on the electricity bill?

We have 2 of them, that remove about 2g/day from the air. Between them & my 8 aquariums, our bill is close to $300/month. I have to hear about it every month!
