Silica sand is fine in FW, but not a good idea in SW. It offers no buffering either in the substrate or to the water column. all those critter rely on aragonite based sand in captivity, or at least the finest coral sand - which I never see in the hobby trade.
Southdown is actually based on silica sand, but is loaded with fine shell fragments and actually buffers pretty well. My earliest light BW tanks were Soutdown based, but aragonite is more effective longer for me, so it is my choice now.
