Mine looks like that too. Put it 1/2" above the water level, into the foam.

That's the Melafix. Get that out of the water & it should start functioning properly.

What do you recommend I do with the water it fills up with? dump it back in? dump it down the sink? My water level will start dropping quick if I sink all the water this thing fills up with ahha. But at the same time I want to make sure I'm getting rid of all the crap from my tank.

Toss it out. Keep the cup off the skimmer, until you get the Melafix out. Next time use the SW kind (hopefully you won't ever need it).

your tank is still cycling, so any water you remove will be good for keeping toxins low.

Hey does anyone know if there are more than one design for the CPR pre skimmer box? Guy at the LFS had one laying around and gave it to me for free, however it does not fit over the powerhead on my skimmer. Was there an older powerhead that used to be thinner or something? I thought pretty much all of them had the same PH, but I could be wrong.

You just have to adapt it.

wouldn't that require pretty much cutting it apart and rebuilding it? Its all bonded acrylic/plastic and is considerably too narrow for my powerhead.

IDK but I do know it has been done to fit different powerheads.

Is there a hole at the bottom of the box? if so it is a bubble trap and not a pre skimmer, you can put a sponge in the bottom and it will reduce the bubbles going into the tank.

no, no hole. Its definitely the pre skimmer box. It must be an older model or something. Guy at the lfs said he didn't even know when it was used last.
