Not too bad... I'd just use it for base rock & build on it with more porus rock. How big is the tank?

the tank is 30gals. i only have one GSP in there. would the rock still work as a 'filter' for the bacteria?

45lbs of rock for successful filtration is going to take up a lot of room. He really would appreciate a bigger tank.

Just normal lighting is fine for LR unless you get Corals

ok cool. would i need to have a skimmer? i mean i own one but i bought it from ebay and its kinda crappy...how long do they usually take to 'break in'?

You don't need a skimmer according to a lot of people. However, having one will help to keep your water parameters stable for longer. A quality skimmer is signifigantly better than a cheapie, but even the cheapies will work somewhat. At the very least the cheap skimmer will help to create flow and oxygenate the water. I'd run it until you can get a better one, or you could even try to modify it to make it work better. Break in is usually 3 days to a week; you can wash it with vinegar then rinse with water to help speed the process.

What kind of skimmer do you have? Some are complete crap.

LOL, darn thing doesn't even have a name brand on it? Try washing it out in HOT water. You're going to have to adjust the bubbles, so it goes about 3/4 way up the tube inside the cup.

dry rock wont aid to the biological filtration of the tank, but its fine for decoration/baserock. It won't hurt anything, it just won't be benefitting the ecosystem at all.

It will eventually become live.
