what is stopping you from going bigger than a 30? if its space, what about getting something the same length and width, just higher?

some dimensions if going a bit taller would be an option. if so you could have yourself a single GSP comfortably. a single fish in a tank might seem a bit odd and make it look empty, but once he gets used to the surroundings and starts growing out he will become more curious and social

Long tanks are generally better for puffers though

yeah i know. if you have something the size of a standard 30(min recommended anyway) and just get something a little higher(38 or 45) you are pretty much accommodating for the bioload/decor/live rock that barely makes the 30 enough

I got what you were getting at lol. Just figured I would vote for team " get a larger tank and you won't be disappointed " lmao. Bigger is always better

My vote is that just enough is always too little. I got a 29 thinking it would be just enough for me, and now its too little for me just a couple months later. The tank I bought to replace the 29 is only 6 inches longer but holds 45 gallons and will be much better, at least for a couple months.

46g bowfront isn't much longer than a 30g.

2 figure 8 in a 30 g could be risky, one might start to pick on thee other but it dosnt always happen , I would make sure they are both the same size and introduce them at the same time.

A 29 gallon (standard "30 gallon") is approx. 320 lbs filled and a 46 gallon bow front is about 640 lbs filled. Even though the space is roughly the same the weight is drastically different. Some apartments state in their rental agreements that you can have no bigger than a 30 gallon FW just because of this.

Two figure 8's in a 30 gallon tank, can it be done? Sure it can be done. Should it be done? It's not advisable. If you want to do some very nice puffers in there and really want marine, like Pufferpunk said, the sharp nose are your best option but that is pushing the envelope on tank size.

If I may throw my two cents worth in, I would stay away from marine puffers and brackish puffers all together until you can go bigger on the tank. There are some beautiful fresh water species out there! Why even bother with brackish or marine? (They are all I keep but I have the ability and space to care for them) Look at the Red Eye species, Dwarfs, and if you can do a 30 gallon long (breeder) look in to SAP's. I was at my LFS last week and the owner asked me to come look at one of his private tanks, it was a 30 gallon planted tank with eight dwarf puffers in it! Amazingly beautiful! I keep some of the more exotic and difficult to find puffers and this tank nearly knocked me out of my socks.....The pure grace and beauty of the dwarfs with their bright greens and hints of yellow and the aquascaping of the live plants, I've rarely seen anything like it.

29g is not the same length as a "standard 30g". 30g is 36" long, so is a 46g bowfront.

If we are concern abt the footprint of the tank in this case, why not suggest tanks in lengths rather than the volume.. as we all know, different brands manufacture tanks in all shape as sizes...
