So, I guess it is decorated enough (right now at least) for Homer? It's kinda hard to give him a "heavily decorated" tank and swimming room in the 30 Gal.

I use a lot of black or dark backgrounds, no problems.

If you like the dark substrate (I do), you can keep it as is, but supply a buffering material elsewhere. I have used crushed coral or coral rubble in dedicated canisters (pre-filtered) with only widely spaced rinsings (3-6 months) to serve the same purpose.

If you do keep the inert substrate, your life will be easier and simpler if you keep the depth of substrate 1/2 - 1" max, just enough to cover the plant bases. It is much easier to maintain and much lower risk at that depth.

one thing you can do is pet smart sells a plant back round that looks snazzy i might change my black for that
