IDK... still think the rim is there for a reason.

It's a pretty common practice among the live planted tank community. I've never heard of anything going wrong. I'm sure it's possible, though.

PP i will take a pic and show you the rim of my tank. it isnt even joined at the corners. they just but up against each other. 4 pieces. no sort of structural stability. IMO even with a 65 gallon tank there is so much weight on each sheet of glass that if the seams wanted to split due to weight i am not sure even a better rim would do too much....but than again im new to the hobby and havent had a tank break on me yet i could be easily convinced otherwise.

I am with PP. Rimless tanks require heavier glass and absolutely perfect seams. Tanks designed for top (and bottom) rims are not constructed to the same standards. NIMFT, never.

Plus, Rainbow fish in an uncovered tank is an extremely hazardous situation.

You don't have to be afraid of that... I have done this with a few tanks. From a 10 gal up to a 55 gallon. Actually, my planted tank looks a lot like the pics posted here. I like the look!!

I don't think a small piece of plastic at the top of a tank is what keeps it from splittin at the seams.

My 75 gallon has not very thick glass, but the top is beefy with a support bar in the center. That would be a poor candidate for derimming. The bar also casts a lame shadow in the middle, I hate it.
