I love to hear the running water in my room. I intentionally leave one of my FW tanks a touch low, just so the water makes a little sound.

The tank probably isn't the cause of your insomnia. If I recall you're in your teens and sometimes the hormonal swings of a teenager causes a short time reversal of your sleep pattern. Best thing that you can do is exercise in the evening before bed after meals. I wouldn't suggest cutting down the size of meals at your age though, you need the protein.
"Darwin swings...annnnnnd a miss. Boy Jim, Chuck's suffered at the plate tonight. He's 0 for 3 and I'm not sure he's recovered from that shoulder pull a few weeks ago. I'll bet the front office is re-thinking that contract."

she told me to take it down and use it as a medic tank so I won't have to sell it :). She will let me use my extra ten gallon as a puffer tank. I would like to use this on it http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... atid=12085. Okay let me re-phrase she wants me to put that on it. They took blood and I have a chemical imbalance in my brain. they gave me some pill and I am sleeping now. but she still won't let me keep my brackish :(

Gracious... why not brackish?
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I have to say no. Heavy filtration is a must unless you wish to do 80% daily w/c and understock massively.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

I don't see why that filter would be any quieter than an Aquaclear, which is my filter of choice.

+1 to the daily exercise. if i dont do enough in a day i simply cannot sleep. i mean CAN"T. i start getting tired around 9am. this is when im out of work or didnt have to get up really for anything. I strongly suggest taking up a new hobby to occupy your brain throughout the day so its not so active while trying to sleep. maybe more fish tanks would even be a better solution :)

I have a big airstone i turn of on a night but my filter is 800 litres a hour and i can't hear it. If the noise isnt keeping you awake then its nothing to do with the fish tank.

I've had that filter before...on a five gallon tank. It kept the water nice and clear. I wouldn't use it on anything bigger. The tank had a small bioload...it was a red cherry shrimp tank. It burnt out in a year. The filter was replaced with an aquaclear which is totally silent and much easier to maintain. I agree with others, sounds like they are just not down with fishtanks for whatever reason.

she has told me the reason finally. she seems to think that the filter is keeping me awake and that the brackish water will corrode my dresser. I will be getting a ten gallon dp tank instead. at least its puffers!

ANY tank may corrode (or warp) wood.

Sigh, this just all seems so strange and illogical. That filter will not make ANY less noise on a 10 gallon than it would on a 30. Put a sheet of plastic under the tank to protect the dresser, +1 to PP; any kind of water will warp woods.
If she just doesn't want you to have a "big" tank, ok, she's the mom, but to give you reasons that don't make sense, and apply just as much to a smaller FW tank just kind of doesn't sit well with me.

However, yes DP's are cute. I hope she doesn't find a reason for you to not keep them at some point. Good luck. +1 to the title of your thread.
