Less smelly, I don't know how to describe it. but the smell before made me wanna puke.

Shoot for the water smelling like a handful of earth, not foul at all, but just earthy.
Did you get a chance to smell the wood? Wood is pretty absorbent, so it may need to be boiled if it's rank smelling.

You could also use activated charcoal for a day or so to help wipe out the odor.

yeah the charcoal should help it.

It used to smell earthy. Now its just rank. The driftwood had somewhat of a stench.

No, maracyn 2 isn't biofilter safe, it's a different drug.
But water changes, boiling the wood, and charcoal may be enough.

can I bake the wood? I don't think I have a big enough pan to boil any of it

I don't know about that. Do you have a container that can hold it and hot water?

Yes, if the hot water won't melt the plastic.

I have baked large hardwood pieces before without problems. I turn it to around 200 F and leave it for 30-45 minutes.

That sounds good then, it will smell like your baking a walrus cake with caca-late chips, but that should kill the bacteria. Don't forget the doodoo frosting.

Make sure you don't start a fire.

I think I may boil water and pour it on it every so often and let it sit in it, sounds less stinky.

I do that with new wood. I change the water out completely every day, and do that for about a week.
I hope your wood recovers from this stench.
