I don't use a filter, air pump or a heater, and they're happy and thriving.

There is currently a dwarf puffer living in my 29g breeder tank, and he picks off some of the babies for food. I use a 295gph canister filter, and keep a fine mesh net over the intake. (I've used baby socks too). I haven't had a problem with any snails getting in the filter.

Just to clarify, the filter is for the puffer, otherwise I would have something really simple in there.

That seems like it would be the best for snails.
