If the kit showed signs of leakage - all the dried minerals in and locking the cap - I would return the kit as defective, whether out of date or not.
I don't have enough experience with API kits to offer suggestions on cross-reading from SW to FW. If the solutions are the same in both kits, then you can cross-read readily. Others here likely have more experience with API kits and can offer more accurate suggestions on that, it is the most popular kit here.
