See the 1st post.
The tanks been running for a bout 3 months.
How long has the tank been empty?

I also suggest changing out the substrate for aragonite sand, to buffer he pH to around a steady 8 & to keep the water hardness up.

What's that the answer to?

That is a recent one. When it was a grow out tank it was bare... No substrate or decor.

I get a PH of 8.2 straight from the taps and it seems to settle at about 7.8. Will this be ok?

Cheers

Sorry. The tank has been empty for about 5 weeks. Is this a problem?

Cheers

Well, I also suggest aragonite sand as I use it for a substrate in my GSP tank and it works great. :)

Unfortunately yes. The bacteria in a tank necessary for biological filtration need a food source(fish waste) to survive. Without this they die off, leaving the tank un-cycled and not ready to sustain fish.

You will need to re-cycle the tank,

:( well you learn something new everyday. Thanks for the heads up. I've got some ammonia lying around so i'll start the cycle tomorrow.

The snails have been in there untill 2 days ago. I dont suppose they'd have kept the tank cycled?

cheers

Not unless there are enough snails to create a bioload equal to the puffer you plan on keeping in there.
