Smart thinking - posting that pic. Any chance you could get more of a close-up pic?

Looks more like a Ceylon Puffer (T fluviatilis) to me--very often confused with the F8. Gonna be a whopping 7-8" & need at least a 40gal tank. One of my favorites & prettiest.
Life size pic:
I'd tell your mom, it's always a bad thing to buy pets as gifts.

I guess since she bought it, then she won't mind buying the tank & accessories it will be needing. To start out the extra tank you have w/good bacteria, I'd fill the bottom with at least 1" of gravel from your other tank. Squeeze the filter material from your established tank, into the filter for the puffer's tank. The article about GSPs linked to above is the same care & feeding as your puffer. When you get that bigger tank that your mom is gonna buy you (a 55g would be perfect!), then you can use crushed coral, or aragonite for substrate.

I have refered this guy from another forum where he was asking about the T fluviatilis. I told him this is the best place to come. I think if we treat it as a ceylon for now until we get a better pic.!
Welcome dark raven and I'm sure the good people will steer you in the right direction.

I highly suggest against getting another puffer untill you have the proper housing available for an adult. They grow uo so fast! Sorry for your loss... Now you know where to come before you get the next one.

Sorry for your loss dark_raven. I second what PP said about telling your mom something like "thanks for thinking of me, but please don't buy pets this way".
