Not sure if it's still an issue, but I found pure ammonia - no surfactant - at Ace Hardware.

Oh, so sad about the one that passed away. =( Good thing you are getting everything together so well though. I can definitely say I'm with you on the intensive research thing, owning a puffer is so difficult but so worth it! We're rooting for you!
