PP - do you have a TDS meter? You can use that to track the salt easily. Short-term salt is not an issue - blackwater is not as soft year-round. With your partials,salt dosing will be changed out pretty quickly. If those plants are real, the almond leaves will be as bad or worse than the salt - the tannins eat light.

PP do U use anything like blackwater, or almond leaves to soften the water and lower ph in your discus tank? Or do U just keep it simple and leave it alone?

Just plain old tap water. Most of my discus have been bred in Chicago water.
