emergency--too small a tank

lol, good point about the plants, I've always had a planted tank and just figured I might be able to research types of plants/macroalgae that would like brackish. And I will definitely post pics when we get settled.

i had a similar situation (got a GSP from walmart and was told they were freshwater and a 10 gallon tank with other fish was fine) and i was freaking out for the first few days. I had to buy a bigger tank asap, and figure out salinity and Green Puffer care. I couldnt sleep the first night i had George (my little sweetie) because i was so worried he wouldnt make is, since i didnt have a pre cycled tank and was emergency cycling the new tank i ran out and got. It was hectic, but worth it. Its been 2 weeks now and things are great, George is happier than ever. It really saddens me that stores are aloud to sell live animals to people and give out horrible false information. Walmart actually told my boyfriend that you can add a bit of TABLE SALT and the puffer would like it. It sounds like you really care about these little guys, and they will soon have a new big home to swim around in and live a long happy life with such a good fish keeper like yourself!

So the two little ones have made it into the big new tank! Ammonia is at less than .25 (but not 0, unfortunately we have ammonia in our tap water here). ph is 7.8 (also typical for us here), and I'm planning to do a 50% change tomorrow evening.

I also discovered that our light has permanent LED running lights in it, even when the light is "off". I haven't had a light like this before and was wondering if this was typical or if the GSPs will mind it at all. Finally, should I still get aragonite sand if the ph is already almost at 8? I was wondering if there was something beneficial to it besides raising the ph. Otherwise I could probably buy a big thing of marine sand that could be more economical.

If you have ammonia in your tap water, you need to talk to your water supply company about it. I guess you could use ammonia-removing resin in your filter but I'm not sure how that will affect the cycling.

Yeah, a straight ammonia reading from my tap is .25. (I'm using a liquid test-kit, but maybe it's not good??) That's so weird to me, but I remember dealing with the tap ammonia two years ago when I set up my other tank, so I wasn't as surprised this time as maybe I should have been. The Prime dechlorinator that I'm using says that it removes ammonia as well, hmmm, not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing right now.

I don't believe Prime actually removes ammonia but changes it into a non-toxic form, that can still be utilized by the nitrifying bacteria.

Thank you all for your help Meet Jahdio and Jellybean! ("Jahdio" affectionately means "little fatty") They're doing well so far, having fun exploring, and don't seem to mind that I just temporarily piled all the decoration on one side for hiding space! It's a big tank for a small room, but we're happy to have it.

Did the driftwood come with the tank? What kind of deal did you get on it all?

lol, do you guys think these are a different type of fish? If after all that they would have been fine in a 5 gallon my fiance might kill me. Or make me put them back in the 5 gallon so he can get Oscars. No, not really, I think 5 gallons is pretty much too small for anything.

The heads of these guys are a pretty shockingly bright green in person (which is why I didn't question the species after reading about the different species here online), but if they aren't GSPs do you think they are F8s? If that's the case, we may just get a few more in the future

Oh, and JRC, we got a pretty amazingly good deal which is why the tank is a little larger than we had originally planned (75 as opposed to 60), but figured it worked out great with your 75 gallon recommendation! The driftwood I bought at a different fish store than the one that sold us the puffers. It's still floating, so I just put a giant rock on top to hold it down.
