Fahaka puffer information... please

Snails are only useful food to produce while the fahaka is very small. I disagree with the requirement for substrate in snail breeder tanks. It is certainly possible, but not at all essential for ramshorns and common pond snails. It is not even essential for MTS in snail-only tanks, but I will not use them for puffer food.

I read that fahakas ( or maybe all puffers?) shouldn't be taken out of a tank with a net. I suppose a tub of water would be best to take them out but I don't think that would be an easy task haha.


Anybody have a fahaka that is pretty good at taking them out that could share their wisdom with me?

yes you should never allow a puffer to be in the air, they can puff up and suck up air which can be deadly for them.

You can catch them in a net but dont pull them out of the water. Use the net to get them in a container of water

I agree with RTR on the snail breeding and substrate... it is a PITA (pain in the a$$)!!! Very few snails are burrowers (assassins come to mind).. and cleaning it is a chore for the worst prison inmates

What I did for Fahaka prep:
1) Make lots of swimming space
2) Make a cave
3) Sand Substrate, optional but interesting (I already had sand)
4) Have a variety of cheap frozen seafood on hand: muscles, clams, crab, squid, and raw frozen shrimp.

I also understand Talapia will round out the diet but that is neither confirmed or denied.

Food Costs: Frozen Muscles $5 for a large bag
Clams: $7 for a small bag
Crab: $1 for 4 crabs
Squid: $4 for frozen rings or $1 for the entire uncut squid
Shrimp: $5 for a 1lb bag

That is a lot of food.... and Asian supermarkets are great for cheap seafood.
