If the power goes out here - I can easily toss some rubbermaid tubs in my trunk, fill them up at my grandmother's or sisters... and proceed to do water changes every few hours... could be quite inconvenient - but I could do it. If i wasn't home - I guess IDk.... =/ Good thing to start planning for though!

Just an FYI, my car battery powered a room light for 3 hours. After that you get nothing. You'll need a HUGE battery bank (both serial and parallel) to power your basic needs (even more so if you are on well water).


Refrigerator, water, fish tank pumps and air stones (heaters if you need them in the winter). For the $600-700 on a decent portable generator far out weighs the cost of a 3000+ solar / wind set up. If you go renewable, they you are looking at reducing your overall costs 365 days a year vs just an emergency situation.

the battery backup that i have runs 10 computers for 45minutes, or 1 for over 7 hours. I got it from a school. works great! I should use it on my tank... i doubt my pump uses as much power as a computer and screen.

Nice for power outages.

I owned a pet store in Galveston, Texas, right on the Gulf Coast. When the inevitable annual tropical storm or two came through (fortunately no hurricanes while we owned the shop) and knocked out the power for 1-2 days, we would take cups, fill them with water from the tank, hold them HIGH over the tanks, and pour them back in. Instant aeration. Several "pourings" per tank, depending on the size, every 3-4 hours. Never had a problem. We did this for our home tanks as well (about 8 of them). Obviously a generator would have been easier on us, but we were young and poor! For someone with a single tank or just a few, that's what I would do. I just don't think those situations come up enough to warrant the expense of a generator. If your water quality is good to start with, several hours without filtration won't be a problem.

What sucks for me is I work at a hospital and if there is a hurricane, Im forced to go in till its all over

stocking levels vs. filtration come to mind.

When we had 6 koi in a 30 gal they all died in a couple hours regardless of our efforts. We didn't know what "stocking levels" were at the time and didn't have a back up. They were fine for 8 months prior to the power out.. then it happened..

a generator is your best friend, not only for the fish but for your own health.. water supply!

Two years ago my power was out for 11 days...You know, Ohio's first hurricane. Luckily I didn't keep fish then.

Walmart, among other places, also has a battery powered aerator for keeping minnows alive for fishing.

Try running 18-40 tanks. It is generators or no sleep. I have to sleep. So, I have generators..

I bought one battery operated air pump for each of my tanks, except the reef, and there are two for it.

This could also be used with a battery air pump in the case of a power outage. It is nothing but a short piece of gravel vac hose and an air pump. I think a hose with a larger diameter would do even better. And maybe even an airstone too.

Remember that the outlet of your hose into the filter box has to be above the waterline inside of the box. Though I didn't do it, it should work even better if the water level in the tank were raised as high as possible. And no it won't work to pump the air directly in to your filter intake tube.

Im afraid I am really ignorant when it comes to these things and touch wood can only remember one outage in my entire life. I wouldnt be able to afford a generator but would battery powered air pumps be better than nothing??? We would have to wrap the tanks in blankets and such as generally power outages are never more than for an hour or two (now that i have said that.... )

why not use the elements to power battery cells
im sol in power outage yet i have good ideas maybe.i live in a gully wind tunnel why cant i harvest it to my advantage?lazy i guess.most my plants perinnials pretty hands off.just couple wind towers ,from what i read should do the trick..probably need to look into a generator,have alot of equipment running on consumer power
