The behavior of Cyclichthys orbicularis is quite similar to Diodon holocanthus.

Wow, I just don't know how anyone could get that little one home and have the set up for it and not want to keep it. I mean, look at how many puffers are out there that are more nocturnal yet people on here have great interaction with and get pleasure from keeping. Each fish is different and has it's own personality as well. So if he gets a D Holocanthus and it's not interactive enough, are they going to keep returning it until they get one that acts the way they want?

I really feel sorry for the cutie, being moved around like that.

Good luck to get owner getting a puffer that matches what they want in a personality.

sorry if that seems harsh but returning a beautiful fish that you have the capability of caring for just because it doesn't exactly match what you want is cruel I think. It'd be different if their care requirements differed drastically from what was expected, but not if it's the same.

i somewhat agree with the above ^ but if it wasnt the fish he meant to be buying, i wouldnt see anything wrong with taking it back. i mean, its not his faukt it was labeled wrong

It's easy for someone on the Internet to say what someone should do. In the end it's his money, his tank, and his time. He is entitled to return it if he wants. I have no say in what he does. If the lfs labelled it correctly it would have prevented this.

I personally see nothing wrong with taking it back if its not the fish he wanted, but make sure he understands two things.

One, puffer species does not determine if it will be nocturnal or not. Many just get that way due to their environment or being nervous with the lights on, and will adjust to a daylight schedule once they are more comfortable in their environment.

Two, he should research the fish he wants enough to know what he is buying, and if he's not sure, take a photo, have the store hold it for 24 hours, and go home and double check species. Otherwise this could have turned out quite nasty if he'd found out that was something like a histix (spelling, sorry) that gets over 3 feet long and have the store not take returns.

I personally think its a more rare find, and an adorable fish.. and he should keep it.. but well, he's a guy and "cute factor" probably doesn't apply to him as much as it does to me

Apparently not as rare as I thought. I went to another lfs and they had 2 of the same "puffer". But this store labelled it as a burrfish.

Similar, but different species is my understanding.

A porcupine puffer is a diodon, while burrfish are uh.. something else I'm too lazy to search it but it begins wtih a c I think, hehe.

Family Diodontidae are the Porcupine or Burrfishes... Bob Fenner

I believe the whole family is known to be nocturnal as well.
