No, they wouldn't (unless you are very lucky with the specimens). They are very aggressive puffers.

I definitely agree with Troender, I would NEVER put two Abei's together, feisty little puffers they are!

I'm partial to your ideas of a Fahaka. Ideally, they grow 1" a month - Mines gone from about 1.5" to 3.5" in two months - a 55 is much bigger than my tank, so if you can get a baby one, I'd say it could hang out in there for some time... If you keep watching Craigslist, you can probably find a great deal in the meantime, I'm waiting to hear back from a couple of listings right now - 150gal for $175, prolly the one I'll try to get first - but there's a few others listed for about $400... not a bad price I'd say lol... and like you said, you'd have some time to save up.

Now to find one lol. A Fahaka is what I originally wanted anyways. Found one on aquabid but its already 3.5 inchs and would be 70 or so shipped so I dont think so. Will have to ask some of the local shops.

I have to confess that I am one of the folks who do not like so-called "grow-out" tanks. IME, if you cannot afford to house the fish in the proper tank from the get-go, then select another fish. Stunting is forever.
Fish do grow slowly past puberty, but the rate of growth then is glacial. Start right (post QT is okay) and will have a full-size fish, quite possibly larger than normal wild size. And it will live much longer than its wild relatives.
