I was simply commenting on PP's 300 gal minimum post, and demented_lullaby's question concerning it. No offence intended RTR.

RTR's always right in my book! I mean, how many of us have kept one to adulthood? I now realize it's not the problem of swimming room in a 300 or 500, it's the huge amount of waste produced by this massive fish.

Much like the palambangensis, RTR is slow moving and relatively reclusive. But one stirred from his resting place, this animal can be rather bellicose! Never mess with the old skool!

Ever since I first saw an Mbu I wanted one but after reading all the info on here and researching as much as I can on them I could never justify getting one. Housing one in a tank where they could only just turn around or the tank is only 2 or 3 times the length of the fish just doesnt seem fair and I dont think it would be much of a life for the fish. I've seen minimum tank recommendations for an Mbu as 6'x2'x2'.... thats more like a prison cell for one. I'd only get one if I had a shed load of cash and the space to house one properly in an absolute monster of a tank.

LOL @ Hilly! Try for non-faceted stones... I am blessed with a SO who does not care for faceted stones. On very special occasions she might wear one jumbo which was her Grandmother's, but my Mother's rocks have never been out of the bank, and the few I have gotten her are rarely worn. The smooth stones are the ones that are worn - and most carry less damaging tags.

See, that's where a puffer-lover-other would come in handy. I'd love if I was bought a new puffer!!

Well, Herself's favorite of all the fish I have had was the mbu, but he was my favorite as well. To keep another I would have to get rid of all the tank room setup and set for just that one fish, which would be hard, not to mention expensive. At least at that scale I could automate the sytem, which would be great.

There were a few tanks at the Bell Isle Aquarium (Public aquarium close to me that closed a year ago) that a Mbu could have lived in for eons - probably smaller than it'd like, but one of the tanks was a concrete tank with a 12x5 viewing window. The tank itself I believe was about 14x10x8 or somewhere there abouts. They didnt have an Mbu in there, but I can imagine one would have liked it

Heck, my little 4" GSP is a lot of mass. Keeping an Mbu would almost be scary though, if they had similar temperments to my GSP which draws blood nearly every time I am fixing something in her tank. A fish that is 1/3 my size when fully grown! AHH!

My one mbu was a lamb, always responsive to people, and never threatened me. When I was working in the tank, he would go sit under the Crinums. But I would not count on that being general for the species. He was forceps-fed his entire life. Safer for me. Those incisors were serious!

No kidding - I dont know the general temperment of Mbus, I researched them briefly before deciding that its not going to happen :p Just making a comparison that if the temperment carried over, the larger fish = larger teeth and if my little GSP draws blood readily, well then.... better get that will in order
