The general rule for live rock is 1lb/1gal of water. If you were to keep it at high end brackish i would shoot for 1.018 +- .001 with water changes. It will be more costly in the long run to keep it at this sg though concidering you wont have the benefits of a skimmer and this will cause you to have to higher volumes of water changes. As far as the puffer is concerned he would be just as happy in either or. It depends on your wants and needs when it comes to either full sw or highend bw.

Got a piece of the mopani in my full marine tank with 3 gsp's, everything does just fine.
The main concern with wood in a tank is the tanic acid it leaches over time.. (that can lower alkalinity and then ph after the alk reaches 0)
Just boil it for a few hours, let it dry, then boil it again...
If ya just toss it in your tank you will have yellowish water for awhile..
