Also if you ever leave a piece of DW in a bucket of water for a long period of time I would suggest boiling it in hot water as well.. the wood can become moldy!

So - Just curious... I got a piece of driftwood from Ebay. It feels damp, so I don't know if they just hosed it off or cleaned it properly... what should I do to ensure it is safe??

I would boil it if you have a large enough pot.. if not, just get a large rubbermaid bin, boil hot water and pour it over the DW.. the hot water will kill any harmful bacteria that may be in/on the DW

Strange as this may sound, you can also bake it. I've learned that since getting my chameleons because that's what you do when you want to use wood that you've found but want to make sure you kill off any bad yuckies. Just make sure it's been wetted so it doesn't burn.

I might have a pot just big enough. I'll have to do that as a project tomorrow... I can just imagine my boyfriend's reaction to THAT... lol

haha yeah, it is worth it if you can find DW pieces yourself for free.
Also be sure to scrape off any bark if there is any, or any pieces that look sharp!
You can use a regular scrubby pad be sure to get the kind without cleaner/soap inside of it or something similar.
